Help please

Ok I’m new to crocheting and I want to make my newborn to be a hat. I can get the instructions up until 4-10

Rnds 4 - 10: Ch 3 and make a dc in the same stitch, then dc in each dc around, joining with a sl st in the top of the 1st dc of the round you just finished… (Stitch counts: rnd 4 = 35, rnd 5 = 37 - increasing by 2 each rnd)

can someone please clarify this for me. I’m also wondering if anyone has any particular newborn hat pattern that they particularly enjoy. I’m always looking for new things to try

When you chain three the author of the pattern counts it as a dc increase. By doing another dc in the base of the chain stitch you have made a second dc increase. When you get back to the chain 3, join with a sl st in the top of the ch3 stitches.

If I were you, I’d crochet the pattern as it says, but disregard the stitch count, because there’s no way you will increase 2 stitches by making only 2 dc’s in the first stitch (the ch 3 counts as a stitch). I just finished one of these hats as written, disregarding the stitch counts, and came out with an even number of stitches on round 10 to make the loopy edge.
Final stitch count on row 10 was 42.

Well spotted, labeelady. I was going to point out that error in stitch counts. I saw a crocheted hat pattern with a diagonal rib somewhere here on KH… I’ll look about and come back with a link if I can find it again.

Everyone knows that you need a turning chain and not everyone counts it as a stitch but usually anything greater than a sc is included as a stitch in the count. I stand corrected!
