Help please! ? about pattern

I’m a fairly new knitter, at least at following patterns. I’m working on my first sweater (newborn size). I have a couple of questions I really need help with.

First of all, I’ve knit 5 1/2" of the pattern and it tells me to end with a WS row. Does that mean I end AFTER the WS row is knitted or BEFORE? (does that question make sense?)

Next question: The pattern says “End with a WS row. The work splits here for 2 fronts and a back. First, the RIGHT FRONT, home of the buttonholes. Row 1: K1, yo, K2tog, k23. TURN (the rest of the stitches sit and wait).”

Can anyone explain to me how that will work? Thanks!!!

Hiya Mom,
K, for the first part of your question. Yes, you finish the wrong side row and will be ready to knit the right side row.
Now for the two sides thingamabob, You will work each side seperately. After you finish the one side it will tell you to finish the other side and reverse the shaping.
So if you are shaping the neckline and you are doing sides seperately, just make sure that the shaping is on the same edge (neck or armhole) that the other side is.

If you start shaping on a right side row you will start your shaping on the wrong side row on the other side. i hope I am making sense hun.

You end after the WS is knitted. So when you turn your work ready to start a new row, the right side will be facing you, ready to go.

The work splits here for 2 fronts and a back. First, the RIGHT FRONT, home of the buttonholes. Row 1: K1, yo, K2tog, k23. TURN (the rest of the stitches sit and wait).

You are now going to work one front while the stitches reserved for the other front and the back are left “waiting”. Just follow the instructions, it will all work out. Work your K1, yo, K2tog, k23, then ignore the stitches still on the left needle (the instructions will bring you back to them after you finish the right front) and turn your work. The pattern will just have you working on the 26 stitches for the R front.

Later, you’ll be told to rejoin your yarn to the remaining stitches and whatever whatever. It will all make sense as it unfolds.

OK, thanks so much for the help!

I tried following the directions and knit a few rows farther into the pattern. Those remaining stitches that are left ‘to sit and wait’, do they stay on that needle, or are they supposed to go onto a stitch holder or anything?

Either way, whichever works best for you. I guess the pattern doesn’t say…
