HELP! Pattern question

I think I’ve got this down but I’m really confused about this…

“Next k row: k4, k2 together, k2 together, k4; Mark both ends of this row with coloured yarn.
Next k row; cast on 3 sts, k to end of row.
Next k row: cast on 3 sts, p to end of row”

Ok I think I figured out how to do the markers but how do you cast on once you’ve started knitting? Is there a different way to do that or do I use different yarn?

Just use a backward loop cast on with your working yarn and knit across those and the rest of the stitches already on the needle. Then do 3 more and purl back across those and the rest of the stitches.
