I’m trying to knit a pullover but I’m confused on this instruction:
Front: Loosely cast on 61-69-75-83-89 sts on larger needles and knit 4 rows garter st, decreasing 24-28-30-34-36 sts evenly distributed on the last row (do not dec over the 4 outermost sts at each side) = 37-41-45-49-53 sts. Then put 4 sts at each side on a st holder (these sts are for the side split edge) = 29-33-37-41-45 sts remain.
Like what does it mean by decreasing 24 sts evenly distributed on the last row?
And what does it mean to put 4 sts at each side on a st holder when it says to knit rows…isn’t rows only used for knitting flat? Then why would I have to put 4 sts at each side? How would I do that?
This is the pattern: http://www.garnstudio.com/lang/us/pattern.php?id=132&lang=us
How to decrease evenly Google search. You can look at any of these hits to find one that works for you.
After the cast on you’re working flat… You can just use a needle threaded with waste yarn and move the stitches to the waste yarn to hold them until you need them again. Under Assembly it explains what to do with the held stitches
The only way to learn some of these things is to get some needles, cast on, and start working the pattern one row at a time.
Decreassing evenly just means not to bunch up all the decreases on one side or the other. For your pattern (size small) you have 61sts. The instructions tell you not to put dec on the first and last 4sts so you would decrease 24sts over the center 53sts. The links GG provided will help you figure out how often to k2tog.
When you start to knit the next row (pattern stitch row 1), knit 4 and place on a holder as GG suggested. Knit to the last 4sts, put those 4 on a holder, turm and knit row2 of the pattern stitch.
