Help on pattern please

Hi, I am trying to start the Rainstorm shawl and never seem to have enough stitches to finish a row.

I have cast on 38 stitches as directed.

Row 1: k2, {M1, k2tog, (p1, k1)x5 )x3

I have placed stitch markers to help me identify the three repeats. Since the M1 comes before the K2tog, I never have enough stitches left to complete the five repeats of p1,k1.

I have tried following the chart and following written instructions. I am stumped.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much!

There are 38 sts in the instructions for Row 1; not sure what’s going wrong for you. :???:

Let’s break the instructions down a bit: K2 [{M1, k2tog, (p1, k1) x 5} x 3]

K2 = 2 sts
p1, k1 = 2 sts; x 5 = 10 sts per repeat
M1, k2tog = 2 sts per repeat

So… {M1, k2tog, (p1, k1) x 5} = 12 sts per repeat; x 3 = 36 sts in all.

When the initial K2 (2 sts) are added, 36 + 2 = 38 sts.

Does this help any?

Hi & welcome to KH. It will work. I haven’t actually gotten needles and yarn and done it, but the count is correct.

You cast on 38 and k2, leaving 36 sts.

k2tog, (p1, k1)x5

k2tog takes 2 sts
repeat (p1, k1) 5 times takes 10 sts
That’s a total of 12
12 x 3 = 36

ETA Same thing DCM said, worded differently. Great minds? For some reason DCM’s post wasn’t showing for me before I posted. :shrug:

Thank you for your input. I am still stumped by this so am obviously not looking at this correctly.

Here is how I read it:
k2 = 2
M1 = 1 (it uses one stitch off left needle, leaving two on right)
K2tog = 2
(p1,k1)*5 = 10
M1 = 1
k2tog = 2
(p1,k1)*5 = 10
M1 = 1
k2tog = 2
(p1,k1)*5 = 10

I get a total of 41 stitches needed.

I don’t know why I’m so stumped. Sorry.

M1 doesn’t use a stitch. This video might help. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGbOiIvWLjc

Yes!!! Thank you! I knew this. That’s what I get for not knitting for the past several years. Thank you!!! :aww:

Thank you for the video for the M1 stitch, it is in the pattern I want to do and was curious how to do it! Thanks! :slight_smile:

C :cool: :cool: L I’m glad I could help both of you.
