Hi. I’m pretty much a beginner.
I’ve just made this Stella pixie hat, and am working on the neck band, and I literally cannot understand the instructions for making the buttonholes (photo below - I’ve also added a photo of a finished hat, from google
).
I could manage Row 1 (I looked up how to do front and back), but Row 2 is mystifying me - it seems to be giving instructions for more stitches than I actually have (the band has 10 stitches of 1x1 rib) and I can’t see what I’m trying to achieve. Any help would be welcome.

The first row has 2 increases (the k1-f/b stitches) and 2 decreases (the pass of sts over and off the needle). You should end up with the same number of sts as you started with. There will be the opening or buttonhole where the stitches were passed over.
Row 2 however has 2 decreases (p2tog) which should be omitted. If you keep working those decreases the buttonhole band will decrease which isn’t shown in the photo. At least one Ravelry project knitter mentions this.
