Please don’t use all caps, it’s considered yelling in the internet world.

If you have a link please include it when asking questions so we can help you better.

This is what I got out of what you said:

Working on 82 stitches to start with.

Body work to 11 inches. Join. Knit front 5 and back 5 stitches together and then work in the round until piece is 18 inches.

Making the car seat belt hole:

Knit to the middle of front, turn
Purl to middle of back, turn
Work back and forth on those stitches until you have 19 ½ inches.

The pattern would be nice to see if you can provide a link or something. But if you can’t we’ll need more information to be able to help.

Have you made the front and back in two separate pieces up till now or are you possibly working all 82 stitches of front and back on a circular needle but working back and forth flat?

I don’t get the part about

Knit front 5 and back 5 stitches together
I don’t see how that would work into anything you have going. But maybe if I understood the construction of the whole works better I’d get it.

Where does the seat belt hole go? On the chest area somewhere? Try to describe how this is made and what you have done so far.

This “Knit front 5 and back 5 stitches together” could be like making a placket where you overlap the first 5 and last 5 sts that are on the needle and knit them together. Kind of like when you do a 3 needle BO, only they’re lapped over. That would join if she’s been knitting flat from the top down like a cardigan and it now needs to be joined to make the lower ‘sack’.

so sorry about all caps. Pattern is by Melissa form www.knittingtree.com I started from the hood gown. Joined the front left front right and back with straight needled. There is a placket that I’m assuming you join. The seat belt hole is near the crotch area and then continues to make a sack bunting. I’m confused on how to knit the front 5 stitches to the back stitches when I have so many on my needles It says to work in the round however never required circular needles in pattern. Please help!

Well, Suzeeq had an idea about the placket. I still don’t know what to say. The link took me somewhere but I couldn’t find your pattern and if I did maybe I’d have to buy it to look at it.

It sounds like you are going to have to work in the round some way. A circular needle would make the best sense, maybe a 16" or 24 inch.

Could you quote the pattern exactly at the point you are having trouble? If you have 82 right after the hood, maybe starting right after you finish the hood would be good. Give us the rows from there to after the placket thing is done.

I think you join the first 5 sts of the row with the last 5 sts. Put 5 of them on a stitch holder and hold it next to the other 5. Then knit one from each together with one from the other.

This is a 1 piece hooded sweater sack. It has sleeves no legs. It zippers down front and is gathered at bottom. I worked pattern from hood down to sleeves down to body. It has a seat belt hole in the crotch area. I’m now at 11" with 82 stitches on needle. It is joined as 1 piece including front lft, back,rt front. It now says join. I’m assuming I join the front lft and right sides. It then says knit the front 5 and the back 5 st tog and work in the round until 18" (making car seat belt hole) knit to middle of front, turn, purl to middle of back. Work back & forth until 19". Leave on needle, cut yarn & tie yarn back onto other side. Work same then join back until measures 23". Dec row: K2 tog across next 2 rounds. BO, pull base tog. With K hook sc around front opening. Sew under arms. zipper.
Does anyone understand? Please help. I’m so lost. This is the exact wording of pattern. I’d appreciate all help!
Thanks
Jeannie

I’m assuming I join the front lft and right sides

Yes. Instead of thinking about knitting the front 5 and back 5 sts together, forget it for now, I’ll explain later. You’re really going to be overlapping the left 5sts and right front 5 sts. Stop 5 sts before the end of a RS row. Put those 5 sts on another needle, it can be smaller than what you’re working on. Then put the needle with the other end of the row next to the 5 sts on the holder, holding them together parallel Knit one st from the front needle, and one from the back needle together (this is the front and back that’s referred to, not the front and back of the piece). Look at the video for the 3 needle bindoff to see how the needles are held and how you knit sts from each of the needles together. You just won’t be doing a bind off here, otherwise it’s the same.

Now the fronts are joined and you knit to 18". Then to make the seat belt slit, knit to the middle of the front, turn your work and knit flat (purl on WS, knit on RS) on half the sts, from the center front to the center back. Knit for an inch, then take a new end of yarn (or cut the working yarn, leaving a longish tail) and do the same on the other side, from the center back to the other center front. Then knit all the stitches in the round again.

When you’re at 23" k2tog across all the sts for 2 rounds, then bind off.

Thanks so much. I think I understand. Can you tell me what a K hook and sc around front opening means? I’m assuming it’s a crochet hook? but what is sc? As you can tell I’m a new knitter! I appreciate your help.
Thanks again
Jeannie

never mind. Just looked at the video it’s single crochet! Thanks so much for your help. I got it!

Great. And the K hook is the size, a fairly large one.

Thanks
