Help needed with this pattern

Hello

Im new to this site and relativly new to knitting. Although I can get most of it some of the abbreviations are confusing me :eyes:

Trying to knitt a teddy for a friends new baby and have got stuck before Ive really got going! The pattern says… “Cont in garter st and inc 1 st at each end of next row and 6 foll 6th rows.”

I would really apprechiate it if someone could translate this for me as I seem to have brain freeze :??:

It’s telling you that you need to knit every row going forward. It also wants you to increase 1 stitch at the end of the next row from where you currrently are, then it wants you to knit 6 rows, and at the end of the 6th row you are going to do an increase. Then knit 6 more rows, and at the end of that 6th row you will increase again. You will keep doing this until you’ve increase 7 times in total.

Generally, if your pattern is available online it’s helpful to include a link to the pattern … people can usually provide more help if they can see the pattern themselves. If there is no link, you can always do what you did and just type out the part of the pattern that is confusing you (just be sure not to post the whole pattern, since that would be a copyright infringement). :thumbsup:

From what you have described, it sounds fairly straighforward though. It sounds to me like you would want to do the following:

  1. Continue working in garter stitch. I assume this is what you have been doing so far. In case you’re not familiar with the names of different stitches yet, garter stitch is created by knitting all rows (ie. you’re not doing any purl stitches at this point).

  2. You want to increase (the abbreviation “inc”) one stitch at each end of your next row. There are different ways to increase - sometimes your pattern will tell you what method they want you to use (be sure to read your whole pattern, including any abbreviations listed at the beginning of the pattern to see if you are supposed to use a specific increase) and sometimes it’s up to you to use what you want. I would definitely recommend checking out the “Videos” page here on KH, as there is a whole section on different increases. In this case, you would probably be fine to use either an M1 (“make 1”) or a KFB (“knit front and back”). Whichever you choose, you would do this once at the beginning of the row and then once at the end of the row.

  3. Then you want to increase one stitch at each end of the “6 following 6th rows”. I take this to mean that you want to increase every 6 rows 6 times. So after you finish your first increase row (step 2 above), you would knit 5 rows even (meaning you don’t do any increasing) and then on the 6th row you follow step 2 above again to do another increase row. You keep doing this (knit 5 rows then increase on the 6th row) until you’ve done a total of 7 increase rows (your first increase row plus the 6 times you repeated it afterwards).

Sorry I was unable to provied a link to the pattern kmaclean but it is out of a magazine that I was given (I’ll remember to do this in the future though)

Hopefully Ill be able to carry on with the pattern now - kmaclean, your directions seem to fit with the rest of the pattern better so I am going to use those.

Nope, you would be completely right to disagree with me, because I was totally wrong. I don’t know how I missed the increase at each end of the row thing on this.

I even thought as I was writing my response that it was going to create a triangle shape and how odd that would be for something.

No problem … Lots of people use patterns from books or magazines, so in that case you can’t provide a link. I was just pointing out that it’s helpful in cases where you did find the pattern online. :lol:

Thank you so much for all your help guys - I will try to share the final results with you.

Just on the last bit now (I know Im not a very fast knitter lol!!) but there is another section that is stumping me slightly… Its knitting the piece for the ear and it says:

“Make 2 pieces. With 3mm needles, cast on
13 sts. K 4 rows. [I][B]Dec 1 st at each end of
next row and 3 foll alt rows.[/B][/I] 5 sts. K 1 row.
Inc 1 st at each end of next row and 3 foll
alt rows. 13 sts. K 4 rows. Cast off.”

Ive cast on and done the 4 rows but its the next bit Im not so sure on if you can offer any further help?

Do decs at the beg and end of the next row (R 5) and then rows 7, 9 and 11. ‘Alt row’ means every other row, ‘foll’ is following or 'after. So dec on the next row and every other row after that 3 more times.
