Help needed to understand a pattern - sleeves

need some more guidance with the sleeves for pattern Patons 1082.

Thank for your help ( salmonmac) clarifying the front neckline instructions. I have completed the front of the sweater. Here’s a pic.

.

I am looking for some additional guidance regarding the sleeves.

From what I understand from reading the pattern, both sleeves are completed identical. Is this correct?

The sleeves require increases and keeping in pattern. (Attached picture of pattern section. I’m doing adult small size).

I have a few additional questions

What is the best increase to use at each end of the row? Do I do these increases after first 2 stitches and before the last two stitches?

To keep in pattern…

Am I correct the first 2 and the last 2 stitches are kept the same as they divider (not sure if this is the proper terminology) between the designs?

To include the new increase stitches, I look at the repeated stitches and add the next one to the right (for the start of the row) and the next one to the left (for the end of the row). Is this logic correct and does it make sense. Here’s what I mean…

Row 1 - after increase of 3 st at each end I would do the following

P2 k1 p2 (k8 p2 tw2r p2) x2 panel (p2 tw2l p2 k8) x2 p2 k1 p2

Additional Question when there are insufficient additional stitches to do tw2r or tw2l do you just knit the stitches until you have 2 additional needed?

Similarly, when I get to row 3 with the c4b and c4f, how do I handle it when the increase is not 4 stitches? Do I just knit the stitches until there are 3 and an do partial cable?

I hope my questions make sense.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Yes, looks like both sleeves will be the same, no asymmetric shaping at the top of the sleeve. If you’d like, you can knit both sleeves at the same time with 2 separate balls of yarn. It insures even shaping.

It’s your preference as to the increase. Make 1, right or left lifted increase, improved kfb are all among the possibilities.

It helps with seaming if the first one or two sts on each edge are kept in stockinette stitch or reverse stockinette. Make the increases after the first 2sts and before the last 2. And yes, predict the next stitch to the right at the beginning of the row and the next stitch to the left for the end of row. You have the increased sts correctly incorporated in your example.

If you can’t work the twists or the cables, continue in stockinette until further increases allow these stitches. You can do a partial cable on the 4-stitch in a similar manner to the shaping in this article from Patty Lyons. When there aren’t enough sts for a complete cable, work a partial. See how it looks with the 4-stitch cable. I know this looks fine with larger cables.

The front of the sweater is very well done, very pretty cable work there.

Thank you so so much for your guidance with this knitting pattern. This forum has been invaluable.

After a decade or so hidden away, I will be able to complete this sweater.

My knitting experts to whom I would ask these questions have unfortunately passed away and none of my friends are knitters. Thank you again for accepting me into this knitting community and for sharing your wealth of knitting knowledge and expertise.

We’re glad you joined us! It’s especially good to see an unfinished project on it’s way to being worn and loved.

Finally finished. Hurray! It’s been a decade or possibly two in the making. Feels fabulous to have completed it. I owe a big thank you to you for all your help with the pattern. Without your help, I think it still wouldn’t be completed! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Oh what a stunning sweater! I’m in awe. It’s not a quick knit but so worth every minute spent on it. Ten out of ten!

Beautiful work Jent. Perfect!!!

Fabulous reeult!
Your knitting tension must have remained the same over the decade as there’s not a hint of this having been put aside and returned to. Really stunning cables.

Definitely not a quick sweater to knit but I’m proud of the end product and that I did finish it.
