I am making a boys jumper and have nearly finished the back. The arm hole is looking big so I re read the pattern again and I am not sure if I have interpreted the pattern correctly.
Dec 1 st in this way at each end of 3rd and every following 6th row until 59 stitches remain.
So I decreased at each end on the 3rd row and from there then counted and decreased at the end of every 6th row. OR should I hyave decreased on every 3rd and 6th row?

Sounds like you did the right thing. Is there a schematic with the pattern so that you can check the length of the armhole?
What pattern are you making? Can you give us a name?

it’s great being able to come here for help. I’m so glad I read yours and the answer. I had one like that and it was for a sleeve that started out wider that average for a very loose one and it sounded so confusing. I’ve no clue yet if I did it right! Looks wearable so that’s what counts, right?
