Help needed please

Hi all,

Happy easter.

I’ve been having a go at a jumper and finally got to the end of the pattern bit, only to find out I dont understand the next instructions in the slightest…I’m quite new to knitting (well this has taken me months but it’s my second thing I’ve knitted with the first being a scarf) so any help anyone could give me using the most simplistic language possible would be very much appreciated  thank you!

The instructions are for shaping the neck and shaping the shoulder; right side K56sts (neck edge). Turn. Leave remaining stitches on spare needle. Dec.1st at neck edge on next 9 rows.47 sets on needle. Work straight in st.st.for 18 rows ending with right side facing for next row.

Cast off 16sts at the beginning of the next and following alternate row. Work 1 row even. Cast off the remaining 15 sts. With the right side of the work facing slip next 26 sets from spare needle onto a sts holder. Join MS to rem. Sts and knit to end of row. Work to corresponding to other side reversing all shapings 15866960871095613084327085648238|900x1200

Happy Easter Monday to you too and welcome to KH!
What a project for a first sweater. I absolutely love the Tintin drawing and you’ve worked it beautifully.
Is it all the directions for shaping the neck or the reversing the shaping?
Essentially you’re going to work one shoulder at a time. Once you’ve finished the first shoulder the center sts are placed on a holder and you’ll work the second shoulder.
Let us know in particular where the confusion is or if it’s the entire section.

Hi,

Thank you for the response and sorry for the delay. Knitting has been put to one side for a few weeks!

I’m a bit confused on how to decrease the stitches on the neck shaping…do I do this at the end of the row? I saw something that said it looks better and fits better to decrease 2 stitches before the end of the row? In which case do I knit 2 together on the right side at the end of the row and then purl 2 together on the wrong side at the beginning of the row?

Thank you very much

Sorry, and would the same then apply in reverse when doing the other shoulder? X

The pattern has you working the left shoulder first (left as you would wear the sweater).

“Dec.1st at neck edge on next 9 rows.”

You’ll be decreasing at the beginning of the purl rows and at the end of the knit rows for this shoulder. It is nice to work the decreases one or two sts in from the edge and it makes it easier to pick up sts for the neckband.
On the right shoulder, dec at the beginning of the knit rows and at the end of the purl rows.

Thank you so much, I’m so looking forward to getting started on this part! Is it decreasing by knitting 2 together and pulling 2 together on their respective sides?

Thank you again

It depends on how you want the decreases to slant. I use k2tog at the neck edge of the left shoulder and p2tog on the purl side (/). For the right shoulder, ssk at the neck edge and p2togtbl (). But you may prefer to reverse these decreases. It’s up to you.

Thank you  I will give it a go x
