Help needed following pattern!

Hi,

I’m trying to follow a pattern for mittens but I’m really stuck and I don’t want to mess up what I have already done!

I have 57 stitches, and am now working the thumb. The pattern now reads:

Next Row K34, turn.
Cast on 2 sts, P15. Leaving rem sts on a holder and cont on these sts only.

Once I have shaped the thumb there should be 44 stitches remaining (which I should be able to knit straight) which make the part to cover the fingers, but I can’t work out how to have 44 stitches left - every time I knit 34, turn, cast on 2 and purl 15 it is in the middle of the remaining stitches and it leaves me with the wrong amount.

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong and how I should be doing this?!

Any help would be very much appreciated!

You work only on the 17 sts - the CO 2 and 15. The rest of the sts are left on a holder while you do the thumb. Though it doesn’t seem like the numbers work out. Unless you CO 2 more somewhere else to add to the 42 sts. Do you have a link to the pattern?

I think I have worked it out!

As I was typing a response something clicked and now I think I have worked out how to do it! I’m going to give it a go now and see if it works out.

Thanks for your help!
