Help need with Sidar 4508 baby coat

Hi, I’m knew to this forum and I’m really hoping for some help with the sleeves in this pattern, this is my first garment. I’m knitting the 5th size. I’ve cast on the required 39sts for the sleeves. Row 1 takes me to 41sts as required, by row 6 the lace pattern is set. That’s all fine until the next instruction, work 38 rows inc 1st at each end of 1st & every foll 8th row to 51sts, working inc sts in patt. My issue is since row 1 already has increases at the beg & end am I meant to be doing an additional inc at both ends of row 1 each time I work it throughout the 38 rows? As well as each end of ever foll 8th row? Because surely that will give me more than 51sts after 38 rows. Also if I do nabb my age to get the stitch’s increased to 51 I don’t know how to work them in patt. I do hope you can help, I feel like by the time I’ll have finished it won’t fit my granddaughter. Thanks in advance

Welcome to KH!

Only work the increases at each end on the next row and then every 8th row after that to 51sts. Ignore the increases at each end in the lace pattern. You can work the increases in stockinette stitch until you have enough to work the increase/decrease pairs in the lace pattern. In other words, make the increases to shape the sleeves but don’t work a lace dec (k2tog or sl1, k1, psso without is accompanying yfwd).

Here’s some more information on working increases in lace patterns.

Hi, thank you for your reply and the link to more help, I’ve read both several times and will try my best to understand them, being very new to knitting and this being my first garment it all seems like a new language to me.

You’re right, it is a new language all its own. The more patterns you work on the easier this gets. You’ve picked a pattern that has both shaping and lace so you have a double challenge. You’re almost there and we’ll all be happy to help. It’s an adorable little cardigan.

Thank you for the support, I’ll keep persevering and hopefully it will click

I think seeing the sts on the needle will make this easier. Counting sts after the increases every 8th row will insure that you’ve actually gotten the correct number of increases (2 per increase row).
