HELP...my basketweave went goofy!

I am knitting a simple basketweave scarf and am almost finished with it. But I picked it up tonight and started working on it…just like I have for the whole thing and the basketweave alternated on me somehow and I can’t figure it out. I was hoping someone more experienced could decifer it for me.

The pattern is done in a series of 5 rows:

Rows 1,3,5: K4, P4, K4, P4, K4
Rows 2, 4: P4, K4, P4, K4, P4

Simple right?!

I did three rows tonight without looking at my finished work as I went and when I did look I noticed that it is no longer alternating. The knits are all on top of each other and the purls are all on top of each other for the entire 3 rows. Where did I mess up? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Suzanne

That should be right, all 5 rows will have the knits over the knits and the purls over the purls. I think… If you’re only working on 20 sts… Can you link to the pattern or a picture of it.

The knits and purls have alternated on top of each other for the entire scarf. Maybe I have been doing it wrong all along and finally got it right. LOL! I will work on getting a pic of it.

How many sts are you supposed to be working on? The back of a knit is a purl, so if you’re only working on 20 sts, the odd rows end with a k4, and the even rows end with p4, so that’s right. (Because the knits from row 1 look like purls when you go to the next row) But after you complete the 5 rows, then do R 1 again, it will be opposite the previous rows. Looks something like this (Vs are knit, - are purl):

vvvv----vvvv----
vvvv----vvvv----
vvvv----vvvv----
vvvv----vvvv----
vvvv----vvvv----
----vvvv----vvvv
----vvvv----vvvv
----vvvv----vvvv
----vvvv----vvvv
----vvvv----vvvv

I appreciate you taking the time to help me. The way you have it pictured is the way the bulk of the scarf is. The 3 sections (of 5) that I did tonight look identical, like this:

vvvv----vvvv----
vvvv----vvvv----
vvvv----vvvv----
vvvv----vvvv----
vvvv----vvvv----

vvvv----vvvv----
vvvv----vvvv----
vvvv----vvvv----
vvvv----vvvv----
vvvv----vvvv----

Somewhere I got something out of order or??? I can’t figure out why it went screwy on me.

You might have done a 6th row just like 2 and 4, which would throw off the pattern.

Aaaaah! I figured it would have to be something like that but wasn’t sure how to get it back on track. This might really show my knitting noviceness but if I were to do just 4 rows on the next section, would it straighten itself out again? Or would I need to 6 again? I feel silly because this is SUCH a simple pattern but I appreciate people like you who are willing to help.

Welllllll… you could always take it out back to that extra row. But you could try and do an odd row (1, 3 or 5) twice and that should fix it back to the alternating knit/purl blocks. Or do row 2 or 4 twice, just do one or the other, then get back into the right order.

Cool! I’m off to the needle races again!
