help me understand how to shape armholes please!

Hello! I’m knitting my first sweater - started on the back piece, knitting from the bottom up. I’m at the part in the pattern where I need to start shaping the armholes and I can’t understand how to proceed.

The pattern states:
“Keeping patt. correct.
Cast off 4 stiches at beg. of next 2 rows.
Dec. 1 st. at each end of the needle of the next and every following alt. row until 27 stitches remains finishing on a right side row.”

I have sort of figured out how to do the decreases, but what exact stitches am I knitting on these rows? Am I following the same stitch pattern that I had been doing for the body of the back piece? The pattern is for an aran type sweater. As I decrease the number of stitches that I am working with, won’t the pattern of the sweater get messed up (as I was working with 61 stitches for the body of the back piece).

I hope this makes sense to someone! I feel like I must be missing something, as I can’t wrap my head around it. Any help is much appreciated!

If you are working with a chart, this is much easier than written instructions. When you bind off or decrease the stitches on each side, they are effectively removed from the chart. So, if your aran pattern is 61 stitches across and you bind off 4 and turn your work and bind off 4 more, you have 53 stitches left to work with. You will use the 53 center stitches of the pattern. Ignore the first 4 and last 4 of the chart. Basically if you are working a cable, continue working that cable the way you have been. If stitches disappear because you decreased, just don’t pay attention to that and keep working the rest of it the way you were before.

Hi i need help with my knitting pattern. Im working on my first cardigan and im on the part of shaping the armhole. The pattern says "Cast off 3sts at beg of next row. P1 row. " I get the first part, the next one im confused about, P1 row. Please help

Welcome!
Congrats on working your first cardi. The instruction probably should be read as “purl one row” that is purl across a single row.
What is the name of your pattern?

Thanks for that salmonmac. I’ll type in the whole part coz it still doesn’t sound right.
Before shaping the armhole, what the pattern said on the last part was:
Cont in st. St. Until work measures same as Back to armhole shaping, ending on WS row.

Shape armhole
Cast off 3sts at beg of next row (w/c is RS)
P1 row. 37 sts
1st Row: k2, sl1, k1, psso, k to end of row
2nd row: p
3rd row: k
4th row: p

I get all of it except that p1 row doesn’t seem to make sense with the pattern. If i purl that row after casting off 3 sts then the 1st row would be on the WS, which i dont think is right hahahahaha

It’s not explicit but the meaning on that initial row is as below:
Shape armhole
RS row Cast off 3sts at beg of next row (w/c is RS) knit to the end of the row
WS row P1 row. 37 sts
RS row 1st Row: k2, sl1, k1, psso, k to end of row
WS row 2nd row: p
RS row 3rd row: k
WS row 4th row: p

Hahaha that’s great becaise that’s exactly what i did. Thank you sooo much!! You must be a veteran when it comes to knitting, would it be alright if i email you if i need help with understanding patterns? The ones that i’ve come across with are pretty easy and I can work it out myself, but I know I’ll come across some patterns that are not so easy to understand.

I’m glad you’ve got the pattern working. It’s all good experience in reading different designers and ways of writing patterns.
