I want to knit a pull over sweater that uses Prima cotton. It says it’s 50g a ball. The yarn is no longer available.
Can I just substitute any yarn as long as it’s the same 50 g? The pattern does not say what weight the yarn is either.
I’d appreciate any help in this area. Thanks so much.
The gauge of the fabric is the most important. The yardage of the yarn is also important in trying to find a substitute.
Does the pattern give the brand of cotton? Then you can look it up at www.yarndex.com to find out the weight of the yarn.
What’s the gauge and needle size of the pattern?
The yarn was Newport Light (100% pima cotton).
Gauge says: Afghan stitch on larger needles: 24 sts and 24 rows = 4". The large size needle is 6 u.s.
I just looked for that brand yarn on the yarn index but I didn’t see it. What do you think?
Is it this stuff? http://www.yarndex.com/yarn.cfm?yarn_id=572
I found that, too, but with a little more searching, I also found this which says it’s a worsted weight yarn.

So I think you’d be OK with a worsted weight pima cotton.
Thank you SO much for your help. My next question is would I HAVE to use a cotton? Couldn’t I just use a different fiber in worsted that would have the same gauge?
Absolutely. It’s YOUR sweater. If you like the yarn and the look, then go for it. There’s no law.:teehee:
It depends on the garment in question, maybe the cotton affects the drape and stretchiness. What pattern are you thinking about making.
You also want to look for a similar total yardage. Cotton is a little heavier weight than other fibers, so a 50g ball of cotton will have less yardage than 50g of something else. The good news is it may take you less balls to make the sweater.
