Help me read a pattern

I want to start my first jumper…eeeeek, and just want to check I understand the pattern before I start.

Its a Debbie Bliss pattern in case anyone has it - from simply soft

Its says Issue 1: And I’m just going to show one size cause its easier
1st Dec row (right side) K6, [K2tog, k7, skpo, k3] 9 times. 117 sts.
work 5 rows in st st

So on the right side (which is marked with a safty pin), I am going to knit 6, then follow the instructions in brackets 9 times, then what? I have 117 stiches on the left needle? (i think I am right on this one, as the number of stiches decreases at the end of each dec row instruction)

Then the next issue. Issue 2
Inc Row: (right side) K1, kfb, k to last 3 sts, kfb, k2
Cont in st st and inc in this way at the each of 5 foll
8th rows. 93sts.
Work 9 rows in st st

I really don’t understand anything from Cont in st st. I am knitting in st st every 5th row after I have kitted 8 rows? Then when I have 93 sts knit 9 rows?

issue 3 -
Mostly it says to work x number rows in st st
But on one section it gives instructions for a inc or dec row ie K6, [K2tog, k7, skpo, k3] 9 times. 117 sts, and then says to work 5 rows? Do I do that in st st, or in the same as the previous instruction? I am guessing st st, because the number of stiches left on teh needle (issue 1) decreases appropriatly

Issue 4 - am I really ready to start this jumper?

Yep, you have this right.

Then the next issue. Issue 2
Inc Row: (right side) K1, kfb, k to last 3 sts, kfb, k2
Cont in st st and inc in this way at the each of 5 foll
8th rows. 93sts.

You will be increasing by knitting into the front and back of two stitches, (one at the beginning of the row and one at the end). Basically you will do this five times - two increases every 8th row.
This should bring you to a total of 93st. When you reach this number of stitches then you will do 9 rows of St st.

Yes, once you have reached 117st then you will work five rows of St st.

Issue 4 - am I really ready to start this jumper?

And why not? How will you know what you are capable of if you never try…

I’ve got to the top of the front of the cardigan, where I am knitting the collar. The collar and button band are knitted in one piece. I’ve just casted off 8, k a row, then 8 again for the shoulder shaping.

The next set of instructions are, work straight until collar reaches centre back neck. What does this mean? I have 30 stiches (which is correct) on my needle.

You’d work even, in whatever st pattern, til the length of your collar piece is sufficient to meet the center of the back neck edge. As you’re working check the neck edge with the work you’ve done to determine the amt of tension you like because if it’s too long, the collar may be limp…if too short, it may pull. Make note of how many rows you do so as to do the same number on the other side. (If you make both fronts simultaneously, no need for this step as you’d end up with the same number.) When you eventually graft (or sew) the back collar seam, you want it centered and flat.

see, I still don’t really understand that.

Where am I measuring what?
