Help me please

Hello Everyone.

I bought the alligator scarf pattern and was doing really well. Until I got to the first row of binding off while still in pattern. I started with 59 stitches and are suppose to end up with 19 which is not happening it always ends being less then the 19.

the row says exactly knit 3 bind off eight tightly. then knit three which includes the stich from the last bind off. I have tried knitting the first three then binding off 8 then knitting three. Then I tried knitting three binding off eight then knitting 2. That still didn’t work. I hope someone can help me I have ripped apart this row several times. This is a gift for my sisters baby who is decortating the room in alligators. please help me.

Kathy

From my experience with binding off for buttonholes…when a pattern says knit 3, bind off 8…it usually LITERALLY means just that. Knit 3…and leave them alone, they are behind you…then commence with the next instruction to bind off the 8 as follows: you will knit 2 new stitches to begin the first bind off…and just keep knitting one more stitch, bind off 1 more…til the 8 bindoffs are satisfied. Then commence with your next direction, ignoring the stitch left behind on the needle.

This should work.

And now pray that this pattern doesn’t have an undetected error. :eyes:

I just answered this on the General Knitting forum, only knitting one more st and using the 3rd K to start binding off. I think Art Lady’s suggestion might balance the # of sts on each end better though.

You want to have sets of 3 sts on the needle with a space between them. Sound like you k3, bound off 8, then knit 3 more which leaves a set of 4 sts. The last loop of the BO counts as the first stitch of the knit 3, so you only knit 2 more.
