Help Knitting Hat in the Round

So in need of help. I am knitting a hat in the round. I already transfered the pattern from flat knitting to round knitting, but now that I’m trying to do the decreases on the hat, I feel like it is not getting smaller.

This is the pattern.
84 stitches on needles.

Round 1: k1, yo, k1, p2
Round 2: K3, P2
Round 3: k3, p2
Round 4: k3, pass first stitch of stitches just worked over last 2, P2

Any help would be greatly appreciated. It is a mock cable pattern. I love it. I love the way it looks. But I feel like the Round with the yarn over, is the one giving me the trouble.

Row 4 should decrease it - k 3 sts, then pass st 3 (counting from the tip) over the other 2 just like when you BO. Round 1 increases sts btw, unless there’s a k2tog somewhere, so that may be why you feel like you’re not losing stitches. If you can post a link to the pattern we can have a look to see if you’re interpreting it correctly. The top decs don’t start until it’s about 7" from the beginning - is that where you’re at?

This is my actual pattern. I honestly don’t know how to decrease it or where to decrease it. I was just hoping to convert this flat pattern to a hat. I’m about 6" from the cast on edge. Do you think this pattern may be a poor hat choice?

It may be a little harder to work it as a hat, but not impossible. Can you post the original pattern rows that you’re trying to convert? That might make it easier to figure out. I can see from what you’ve posted that R 1 incs sts and R 4 decs so ultimately you have the same number of sts. But you need to do more decs for the top shaping.

This can work as a hat. It’s making mock cables so you want to start the decreases after a row 4. Don’t do the next round yarn overs but begin decreasing on the p2 columns with a p2tog maybe at every other p2 (say work 8sts, p2tog). Work decrease rows every other round. Work the alternate rounds by knitting the knits and purling the purls. The next decrease round you’d decrease with one fewer st between the decreases (work 7sts, k2tog). This will interupt the cables but that is going to happen on the crown as you shape it anyway.

I brought the pattern today. I will have to take a picture of it. New to this site, so I will try to do that.

Okay. Hope this works.

This is the original pattern. I converted the pattern to the round by dropping off the end stitches (the +4) and changed it to:

R 1: k2, p2
R2: K1, YO, K1, P2
R3:K3, P2
R4: K3, P2
R5: k3, pass first st of stitches just worked over last 2, P2

Repeat 2-5 for pattern

Okay, rows 2 and 4 have to be worked in reverse, not just changing the purls to knits and knits to purls.

So row 2 would be p2, k1 yo, k1 and row 4 is p2, k3.

Now, to decrease the sts, leave out the yo on a row 2, and then you’d have just k2, p2. Then the next dec row, p2tog every other or every 3rd p2 rib, work a plain row, then do the other p2togs where you still have 2 purls. Work a row plain (k2, p1) and k2tog every other or every 3rd knit rib, and do a plain row, then finish with k2tog in the other knit ribs. Then you can k2tog on the last row. Try that and see how it works.

Thank you! Thank you! I’ll get right on it.
