HELP! I've turned the heel, now Im stuck

I’ve knitted 3 different socks, and I ruin them everytime I get to where I have to pick up the sides after I’ve done the heel. I started with 48 stitches with a total of 4 dpns. I have two needles, one that i’ve ignored and the other is the heel and now I have to start picking up the sides with a free needle. HOW? Where do I go from here? I’ve read all the tutorials you can find, but it seems like everyone does it differently. Im so frustrated I want to cry.:hair:
Can anyone help me? I would be so grateful

Signed,
Frustrated :knitting:

So let me get this straight you have done the heel flap and you are just about to make the gusset?! If so you are going to use the free needle to pick up stitches…you will be taking the needle inserting it under the cast on edge of the fabric hanging towards the left (go under two pieces of yarn side by side)Im not very good at explaining but didn’t want to leave you in the dark…
I used this video and literally worked while watching it: http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/advanced-techniques
scroll down to working the heel of a sock

its very helpful and shows you how to pick up stitches. Believe me despite knitters techniques this one works, so relax, take a deep breath, watch the video and give it a go! YOU CAN DO IT!

Thank you Aimee, you are understanding me correctly, but what I cant understand is once I pick up the stitches with a free needle, I now have 3 dpns on. Now what do I do? My working yarn is at the top with the finished heel. Its so hard to explain with words. Im sure you understand that. Maybe I will never get the hang of this.

Ok everything sounds fine to me…you are supposed to have the three dpns occupied. OK, so you should have a fourth needle. Use that needle to knit across the next row, that will then free up a needle, which you will use to knit the rest of the sock. Yes it can be difficult to explain but you will get it I promise:muah:I was once in the same state of confusion you are right now. Let me know how you are doing, I will stay on here to help you through it

Knit the stitches that I just picked up (on the side)? Cause my working yarn is still on the heel that I just finished.

Ok what I meant was knit the row after the row of stitches you just picked up…hmm your working yarn is still on the heel? In the middle? So when you picked up stitches you where supposed to carry the working yarn along with you. OK explain to me how you picked up your stitches? If you have any pics it would be great but if not its okay too;)

I just picked up the stitches and left the working yarn up at the heel. I didnt take the working yarn with me. Was I supposed to?

yes …ok let me explain when you pick up stitches this is how you do it…you insert free needle thats being held in right hand under the cast on edge (two pieces of yarn side by side at the top of fabric) then as if you were knitting wrap working yarn away from you on needle and knit to bring up a stitch… Its hard to explain but I know what your doing wrong and we can fix this…do you understand what I mean at all

Okay, I did that, now what do I do? I have a needle holding the finished heel, and a needle that I’ve ignored and now I have a needle at the side. I have to divide these somehow. I hope Im not being a pain.

You are totally not being a pain:teehee: Okay so we are getting somewhere. Umm how many stitches are on
needle 1
needle 2
and
needle 3
and is the working yarn where it should be now?

Not sure which needle is needle one, two or three, but the working yarn is down by the needle I’ve been ignoring. Does that make sense? I have 24 stitches on the needle ive ignored :teehee:

okay so you have 24 stitches on the needle you’ve ignored( this would be the front of your foot) and how many on the other two?

when you pick up your stiches on the left side use your working yarn to knit the stiches as you pick them up, then knit across the stiches you had on a holder ( or spare needle however you had it) then pick up the stiches on the right side continuing to use your working yarn to knit them. That should complete the loop.

edit: looks like i need to update my page more, or type faster!

I have 13 on the ones I picked up on the side and 14 on the finished heel.

ok now listen carefully you are supposed to have the 24 stitches on the front side of the sock (2nd needle), and the heel stitches are supposed to be divided amongst the first and third needles as evenly as possible. It sounds like you have done this am I correct?!

Johanna are you still there? Did you understand what I meant?

Hi Aimee,
How do I divide the heel stitches? I have the needle that is on the side that I picked up and the needle with the 14 holding the heel and 24 on the needle I’ve ignored. This is getting confusing!!

Okay, Johanna this is what we are trying to do we are trying to get your sock to look like this so you can get back to knitting with all three needles. What kind of sock yarn and size needles are you using?

borrowing it from silvers tutorial;>

Hi, I am knitting with 4 oz yarn, 100% cotton and on size 3 dpns. I keep wondering if I should have left all 3 needles on and just divided needle one and 3 in half and worked on the heel that way. Are you getting frustrated yet? Thanks for all your help Aimee. I hope I get this.

Yes that is exactly what you were supposed to do:teehee: and no I am not getting frustrated:wink: Im just trying to figure out how many stitches you should have and where they should be so we can fix it and get back on track. Are you using fingering, sport, or worsted yarn? How many stitches did you cast on with? How many stitches did you pick up on each side? Then we can figure out where to go from here:muah: Youll get it dont worry

Okay from what I understand at this point we should have
24 stitches on needle#2
19 stitches on needle#3 ( 12 previous stitches and 7 you picked up along side)
19 stitches on needle#1 (12 previous stitches and 7 you picked up along side)
