Help in pattern - baby hat

Hello,
I really love this site it is very helpful!
I’m a newbie and doing my 1st project!

The pattern states - after casting 73:
Do a K1P1Rib for 7 rows
Row 8: Rib 4, M1 11 times, rib 3 - 85 stitches

  • What does that mean? Do I make k1P1 4x then do M1?
  • But I do not have enough stiches to make it 11 times?
    Help, please!
    Thanks a million in advance!

No, you work 4 sts in rib (k1, p1, k1, p1) then m1 11 times altogether, then do the last 3 sts in the rib pattern. However, that only uses up 48 sts and adds 11 for a total of 59 sts. Or if you do a kfb that would use up 58 sts plus 11 gives you 69. Is there another part of the row you forgot to type in?

Yes, it seems like there’s something missing there. It would be great if you could provide a link to the pattern - if its a free one - or check that nothing was missing from the instructions you typed. If anything had brackets around it, include them too.

Thanks for replying so quickly! Yes it is a free pattern on Lion Brand. Here’s the link: http://www.lionbrand.com/cgi-bin/patternFinder.fcgi?craft=Knit&search=Search&searchText=50364&search=Search
Maybe I am reading it wrong…

Rib 4, M1, [rib 6, M1] 11 times, rib 3 – 85 sts.

I deleted the instructions for the other sizes, and just left your size. So you rib 4, then M1, then the brackets are the important thing… whatever is in the brackets you have to do 11 times. So you (rib 6, M1) 11 times…
ie rib 6, M1, rib 6, M1, rib 6, M1 etc till you’ve done it 11 times.

Then rib 3.

Oh - I see… So when they say rib 4 or rib 6 - that means work 4 or 6 stitches (k1, p1, k1, p1) for 4 then M1 then (k1, p1, k1, p1, k1, p1) then M1 11 times.
I think I got it! Thanks again! Did I say I love this site?!
