I’ve been a knitter for some time but this pattern has got me confused on my first row. It’s a baby sweater. The instructions are cast on 147 1st row (rs) K1, yon, *K5, slip the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th sts over the 1st st, yon, rep from * to last st, K1. After this you’ll have 61 sts on your needle. What do they mean by slipping the sts over the 1st st. Can someone please help. Thanks.
You’re passing the stitches over the first stitch as you do when you bind off or a psso decrease. It’s for a scalloped edge, right?
Once you knit the stitches, you’ll have 1 2 3 4 5 on your right tip.
Pass stitches 2 3 4 5 up and over stitch 1 and off the needle.
Thanks Ingrid for your instruction and quick response. It makes sense to me now and worked beautifully. Yes it’s a scalloped edge. I’ve never done one before. Always learning!
Hi, I’ve just joined KnittingHelp as I’m stuck on a knitting pattern instruction; this same instruction but I’m still confused!
My pattern asks to cast on 97 sts, got that. Next K1 yon (now have 4sts on right needle). Then is says K5 sts (now have 9sts on right needle). Now comes the bit I’m confused on it says slip the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th sts over the 1st st.
What do I need to do?
Welcome!
When you K1, yon you should have 2 loops over the right needle, the knit stitch and the yarn over.
Then follow Ingrid’s directions to slip stitches 2,3,4 and 5 over stitch one. Stitch one is the stitch nearest the tip of the needle.
What is the name of your pattern?
Hi, Thank you for replying, have now been able to continue with the knitting. The pattern is from a news paper, its from a company Quadrillecraft.com and its the baby’s bonnet. I also did the bootees from the pattern booklet which again I found some of the instructions confusing but they turned out ok but not quite as the picture shows
The booklet states its a step-by-step beginner’s guide!
I’m confused too… does it mean the first stitch goes under number 2345? How do you even do that. Now I’m gonna have to try it on something lol.
Okay yeah yeah yeah I think I can visualize that, will take some maneuvering to do it though
It’s not that different from a simple bind off. There you lift the 2nd stitch over the 1st. For this stitch you knit 5 and pass 4sts over the 1st and off the needle.
