Help! How to knit a flat disc from outside edge to center?

OK I am officially annoyed with this hat . It is driving me batty!

I have seamed an approx. 4" wide rectangular band and picked up 74 stitches around the top edge of the band. How can I now make a flat disc for the top of the hat with those picked up stitches?

All the instructions I have been able to find are for more stitches. :::sigh:::

Starting with your 74 sts, you need to find a multiple that goes into it, which isn’t going to be easy. You need 72 or 78 for a multiple; 72 would be easiest. Knit a round and dec 2 sts, one at the beginning and one at the middle. The next round, knit 7, k2tog, all around. knit a round, next round k6, k2tog all around and a plain knit round. Then k5, k2 tog, knit 1 round, k4, k2 tog, etc. If that decreases too much either add a 2nd knit round between the dec rounds or use another dec number. Like k10, k2 tog, k9, k2tog, etc.
