Help How come

I am starting my very first project. The pattern says to CO 96{104-112} sts loosley.

ok I can do that I think. Next step RW 1-5 is K1,P1.

I do the first row and I think it is ok. I then go to the second row and about half way I find a mess up and have to tear it all out. I dont know how to fix it. or overcome it. How do I fix it or over come it?

How did you mess up? It’s a bit hard to help you either fix or overcome it if we don’t know what it is.

cast on 96 stitches. (AN EVEN NUMBER)

rows 1 to 5–“K1, P1”

so
r1 VuVuVuVuVuVuVuVu

R2 the same… Only.. you’ve turned the work
–so the last stitch you worked was a P(as a u) —turned, you are looking at a K(as a V)

so, *K1, P1, (across a row,–with an even number of stitches cast on) will Yield 1 X 1 ribbing

R1 and 2 will be the hardest, (as you establish the pattern)

After that, its a matter to LOOK…

see how i used a V and a u for the demo? that is what you are looking for… V (knit) followed by u (purl)

How do you overcome problems?

The 3 P’s
1–Persevere
2–Practice
3–Patience

Notice perfection is not one of them!

if you are a new knitter, it takes the 3 P’s to get good.

but you can do it.

you can also identify what is going wrong

Are you messing up by knitting 3 in a row?

or are you messing up by making Yo’s (extra stitches) as you move the yarn from the front of the work to the back (or from the back to the front)

or do you have some other problem?

I understand but I am a new knitter and have trouble discribing what I have done wrong. the next time I get to that point I will take a pic of it.

if you have made a mistake and it is simply somthing like knitting a stitch you should have purled then it is possible to unknit or tink (thats knit backwards :D) for a few stitches back past the mistake so you can ocrrect it. Infact i have been known to tink back two and a hlaf rows to undo a stitch so is my loathing of frogging!

good explanation of how to tink is found here:

Are you sure its a mistake and a mess up? It is hard to see any pattern emerge in only 2 rows. You may need to finish a few more rows before you can see the pattern.

With ribbing you need to move the yarn from back to front to the back. Make sure the yarn goes between the needle tips, not over them or you’ll get extra sts. And yes, knit at least 3 rows because it’s hard to tell if it’s ribbing or what until then.
