Help! Hedera sock pattern

Hi there,

I’m knitting my first pair of socks, and I may be a bit over ambitious starting with this pattern. I’ve started with the Hedera pattern http://knitty.com/ISSUEspring06/PATThedera.html from Knitty - and there are bits which have me confused. Here goes:

Gusset
Slip last 8 sts of previous row onto one needle; continuing with this needle, pick up and k 24 sts (1 st in each slipped st) along edge of heel flap and 1 st between heel flap and held sts, k first st of held sts. 34 sts. This needle will be designated Needle 1.

I count that there should be 33 sts, not 34.

Or am I missing something reaaallly obvious? And this is got me bent out of shape as well - Using next needle, work held sts in patt, to last st. 29 sts. This needle will be designated Needle 2.

Here is the pattern

Round 1: [K1 tbl, p2, yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo, p2] around.

Rounds 2 & 4: [K1 tbl, p2, k5, p2] around.

Round 3: [K1 tbl, p2, k1, yo, sl1, k2tog, psso, yo, k1, p2] around.

I’ve got that bit sussed on the leg working in the round - but how do you work this pattern over 29 stitches? Do you treat one row as a round? Am I even making sense anymore? I think I have thought about this for too long.

Any help would be soooo appreciated!!!

Thanks!!

It is 34 from what I can tell.

You pick up the final 8 from the previous needle, pick up 24, m1, k1 of the held stitches.

At this point you’re only working the pattern stitches on the top of the foot rather than all the way around the leg. Just work the pattern on the stitches you have.

ok. I got my magic decoder ring out and I’m ready to have a try.
Regarding your first question, it does add up to 34. You slip 8 to start with, pick up and knit 24, that makes 32, pick up one between the heel flap and held stitches, thats 33 and knit the first stitch of the held stitches, thats 34.

Regarding your second question, the instructions say to work in pattern until the last stitch. That means the last stitch is not included. This is an eight stitch pattern so it will fit exactly 7 times.:cheering::cheering:

Aha ! You guys rock! Thank you!
