Help!!: haven't a clue what to do next

I am a novice knitter!!

My pattern states:
From 1st to 8th rows sets patt

Shape armholes:
Working in patt as set (throughout), proceed as follows…
Cont without shaping until armholes measure 10cms

My problem is for rows 3,4,5,6 the patt states to k2tog/p2tog at the start and end of each row. How to work in patt without decreasing? Do I just forget about the decreasing at the start and end and stick with the pattern??

First time posting so I’ll try to upload a pic.

Thanks so much

What is the name of your pattern and designer?
You’ll have to account for the decreased sts when you begin and end the rows. You always want to keep the pattern aligned across the row. You can subtract the missing sts from the pattern instructions or you can look at the pattern that you’ve worked in the rows below and determine how to continue it on the decrease rows. This is called “reading your knitting” and it’s an invaluable skill to have. The important thing is to keep the alignment of the pattern as you work in the decreases.

This tutorial from Patty Lyons deals with keeping as much of the pattern stitches as possible while decreasing and may help depending on your pattern.
