HELP! First FairIsle Project

I’m interested in trying my first FairIsle knitting project with the “Center Square” hat that is featured on the current issue of knitty.com.

However, in reading the pattern, it tells me to hold two strands of the MC together and cast on 64 stitches. To do this, do I treat the two strands as one strand of yarn or do I alternate and cast on one strand then cast on the other strand?

Then, later on, when I join the CC, am I now working with three strands? Do I drop one of the MC strands?

I’m so confused . . . Thank you so much for your help!

It says that the hat is worked using two strands throughout, so both your main color and contrasting color will use doubled strands. Just treat them as if they are one strand. After a while, you’ll hardly notice.
