Help dont understand pattern!

I got a pattern online and this is what it says:
This ribbed scarf is a fairly quick knit. I did it over a weekend in my spare time and had it finished and tassled almost exactly when the snow started to melt on Monday. But Man! was my neck warm

Materials: dk weight alpaca, doubled
US #10 needles

Directions:
Cast On 34 stitches
Row 1 and 3: Slip 1, Purl 1, Knit 2, Purl 2 until end
Row 2 and 4: Slip 1, Knit 1, Purl 2, Knit 2 until end
Row 5: Slip 1, Purl 1, Knit 2 Together without slipping sts from needle, then k first st again, drop sts off of needle, Purl 2 until end
Row 6: Slip 1, Knit 1, Purl 2, Knit 2 Tog as aboveuntil last two stitches, Knit 2

Continue this until 5 feet or desired length.
Then tassle the heck out of it - I did 9 times on each side to be exact

i got the right yarn and needles and im just confuse what does * mean in the pattern? and for the 5 and 6… can someone help clear it up??

Thanks in advance

The *s in a pattern mean repeat what’s between them, so you start by Slip 1, k1, then repeat only p2, k2 to the end of the row.
On row 5 the k2tog without letting them slip off the needle is just that. K 2 sts tog, but leave them (the 2 sts you just knit tog) on the left needle, then knit only into the first st of those 2 and then let them off the needle. Same thing with row 6 and only you’re purling 2 tog, then purl the 1st one again. Doing that makes a twist stitch.

What Sue said is spot on except for the last line. is not purling 2 togtehr. it is just purling 2 and then doing the knit 2 togther, leave stitches on your left needle then knit the first stitch, just like you did on the row before.

Ooops, thought that it was doing a p2tog, since it was a purl row otherwise. Will read more carefully next time.
