Help...Decrease Question..How to Keep the Pattern

Help…I’m so frustrated…I’m making the Interweave Knits Hexacomb sweater. I am starting the decrease rows for the armhole. Can you help with making the following decreases and keep the pattern? Thanks to anyone who can help!!!
Decrease rows start with K1,SSK.
Row1 pattern: K1 then K3, P2, K3. I figured this would become:
K1, SSK, P2, K3 then continue in K3, P2, K3
Row 2: Knit even
R3 pattern: K1, then K1,P1,K4. Would this become
K1,SSK,K3 then continue K1,P1,K4???

These things are always a little tricky (That may be why they don’t tell you exactly what to do, especially with multiple sizes, which all may be a little different. )

What you need to do is to think carefully about where you are in the pattern after you do the decrease on each row and it will be a little different each time. On the first row 1 of the pattern you normally have K1 K3, P2, K3 so at the beginning you would do the knit one and then the SSK would use 2 of the first K3 stitches, so after you do the SSK you would K1, P2, K3 and then repeat the usual repeat across.

On the Row 3 you would K1 and the first K1, would already be decreased away so you should be ready for the P1, then the K4, but you will use the P1, and the first of the 4 knits to make your next SSK so you would be ready to begin with the last 3 of the first group of K4 after you do the SSK.

It changes all the time and the way I do it is to do the K1, SSK and then figure out where I would be in the pattern at that place and do what comes next. It takes a good deal of thinking, and close observation of the way your pattern works. Hopefully by this point in the making of the sweater you will be familiar enough with the pattern to figure out what you need to do to keep it in pattern as you do this.

Thank you for taking the time to try and explain this to me. Let me see if I got it straight.
I understand Row 1 decrease.
Row 3 decrease, I would K1 (edge), then eliminate the 1st K1 because of the Row 1 decrease, the P1 and one of the K4 would make up the SSK, then I would continue in the pattern with K3.
So as I continue the decrease rows (total of 5), I would first adjust the pattern for the prior decreases, then do the ssk?
Thanks again!!!
