Help! Confusing cable chart

 I am way confused! I’m doing a cardigan with a fairly complicated-looking aran cable and the chart makes no sense to me! The pattern says:

K25, work row 1 of Cable chart over 30 sts, k5, rib 9. Cont in pat until the same length as back to underarm.

…how in the world does that make up an entire row of the left front of the sweater? Also, if the whole chart is 20 stitches long, how do I work it over 30 stitches?

I’m also really confused by the lack of directions for the cabling itself. Photos of finished project and confusing chart below. All the pattern says is “6 st cable” and shows a few diagonal lines over six stitches in the pattern. No explanation of what stitch the diag lines call for, or how those 6 stitches turn into a cable that looks to me like 24 stitches. Am I a total moron? Help please!

The cable itself in this pattern is done over 6 stitches–slip three onto the cable needle and hold in back, knit three and then knit three from the cable needle. You’ll get a right leaning cable.

What I don’t get is the 30 stitches, either. Usually a chart has you work a certain number of the repeats and then the stitches outside the highlighted box. In this case, with the 13 stitch repeat, you have either 20 stitches or 33 from my first glance at this chart.

How many stitches do you have on your needle?

Also, I’m assuming there are more than one cable chart for this pattern. Are we looking at the right one for this section?

I know–exactly. There are no instructions regarding a repeat, either. Looking closely at the photo of the pattern, it looks like they’re using a 2/2 cable instead of a 3/3, but I don’t understand how they get the intricate pattern. I can probably slog my way through copying the photo, but the chart doesn’t seem helpful at all!

There are 69 stitches on the needle. I guess that lends itself to multiples of 13…but I’m still confused.

No–seriously–that’s it for the pattern. That’s why I’m so confused. It looks to me like the chart for row 1 should be p1, k6, p9, k6, p1. But where do I go from there?

If I were only to see this chart, I’d envision some ribbing with a simple cable every 8 rows. This is why I’m wondering if there are some charts missing. Maybe you can check the publisher’s site for errata.

OK, I should add that I found instructions for doing 2/1 and 2/2 left and right cable stitches, but no mention of in what order/how often, etc.

Dude, that CAN’T be the only chart! Where’d you get the pattern? Consider writing the publisher or author if that info is printed on the pattern because there is certainly more to the cabling in the pic than just that one chart. :?? :??

 …checking their web site now. Good idea!

:happydance: Eureka! There’s a huge chart on the web site. Phew! I thought all my knitting brain-cells must have leaked out with my last project!

Now a big chart makes sense.

Do ya THINK they’d have had the good sense to PUT IT IN THE BOOK???

This looks better, eh? Phew. Thanks for all your help, ladies! Mwah!

I know! Yeesh! If only everyone could be as perfect as we are.

I can’t get over that. :?eyebrow:
