Help! Chemo Earflap hat question

Ok I am having problem with the beginning of this pattern. I am suppose to make 2 earflaps…

Earflaps (make 2)

CO1

Knit, purl, knit into stitch (=3st)

Purl across

KFB, knit to last stitch, KFB

Purl across

Repeat last 2 rows until 15 (17,21,23)st ending on a purl row. Break yarn. Place stitches on a holder (or spare needle).

So, I cast on one single stich, right?? And then it’s telling me to knit the stitch… and then purl and then knit into the stitch??
Thats the part that is confusing to me. If I knit the stitch, then go back and purl it I still only have 1 stitch right?
How do I knit into stitch??? Is that what gives me 2 more stitches to get 3?

And then it’s telling me to knit the stitch… and then purl and then knit into the stitch??

Yes, you’re inc to make 3 sts from one. K the st, leave it on left ndl. Yarn fwd, P it. (Still on left ndl.) Yarn back, K it again. (3 from 1)

you are knitting, purling and knitting again all into one stitch. you are pullnig 3 loops through instead of just one, so as Cam said,
Knit the stitch, but do not slide it off the left needle, then purl into the same stitch, again don’t slide it of the needle, then knit it again. This time you slide it off the needle and will now have 3 stitches where there was just one.
