Help: Binding off in middle of lace pattern

I am working on the Wishes Beaded Lace Cardigan found on loveknitting and ravelry. This is my first project that is not a baby blanket and also the first that calls for casting off in the middle of a row.

I have 291 stitches in total with the pattern saying the next row needs to be
*k1, k2tog, k4, yo, k1, yo, ssk, repeat from * to last st, k1

Below is a quick diagram of how the unworked stitches (bottom row) are worked into patterned stitches (top row).

To divide the back and front I need to:

Step 1: Pattern 55 stitches, and slip these stitches onto a stitch holder.
I have worked out that I will need to use 56 stitches for this step due to the k2tog

Step 2: Cast off 15 sts
The last stitch to be cast off would be the k1 at the beginning of the repeat as I would need to k2tog to pass this stitch over. A total of 17 stitches would be used.

Step 3: Pattern 166 sts including st left after cast off
_I had already patterned the k2tog in the cast off so only need to pattern a further 165. This would make the last stitch a yo which does not seem right. 164 stitches are to be worked. _

Step 4: Slip remaining 55 sts onto a stitch holder
I have worked 56+17+164=237. Only 54 stitches are left unworked

Below is a 2nd idea - working from step 2

Step 2: When casting off the 15 stitches, I will knit a 16th to then be able to cast off stitch 15. This stitch left on the RH needle would then become stitch 1 of the pattern repeat

Step 3: As I need to only pattern a further 165 stitches (the first is a k1 instead of a k2tog) I need to work a further 165 stitches to get this count. The last stitch is the knit stitch before the first yo.

Step 4: I again have only 54 stitches unworked!!!.

Also as an aside (this should be simple) - The ssk on the right side is s1, s1 (both knitwise), then knit these 2 through the back loops. I have seen the ssp (on wrong side) done as s1, s1 (both knitwise) then either p2tog or p2tog tbl. Which is the right way.

I hope you guys can help as this is getting me into a complete tizzy!

I may not be understanding but I would follow the directions as given not taking dec etc into account. Pattern across and slip 55 to holder, cast off 15, pattern 166 and slip 55 to holder. That adds up to 291.

Thank you for the help. I was able to message the designer over ravelry and she got back to me.

The stitches are all to be done in pattern (Inc cast off) leaving 54 at the end. The next step for those ‘55 (54) unworked’ stitches would then have a pattern starting with a yo making the stitch count 55.

Will be interesting to rejoin yarn only the cast off in pattern a yo! Weave the ends before I start!

Perfect! Thanks for posting the designer’s explanation. It may well help others with the same question.
