Help! Adding hood to poncho, big hole!

Hi,
I’m new to this forum and knitting! My first project is a pooncho. I’m adding the hood. I just cast on 3 st, picked up 60 stitches, cast on 3 more, then my pattern says to do purl, knit, blah blah, blah. The problem is, as soon as I started to purl, there seems to be this big hole. Have I missed something? Can anyone help?
