Hello:). My name is haylee. I’m 15… and i love to knit
i just started a few months back and i know a lot of the basics like casting on, knitting<garter stitch being all knit>, and ik how to purl… and ik how to bind off. And i know how to sew two pieces together with thread and a sewing needle lol. But i wanna do some big projects!!! Of course I’ve been searching around for some easies but i like a challenge now and then. I was wondering though if anyone would be willing to answer some questions for me
or maybe show me some stuff if you have skype? My questions: 1.) What is a yo (yarn over)? 2.) How to increase/decrease stitches? 3.) When i knit in the round between four DPNs i always have this string that is neither the working or that little piece in the knot. But it always messes me up when i get to the last needle… any way to avoid it or make it less of a problem? Do i need to use five needles instead of four?
Any help or answers would be appreciated<3 i would love to get better at this!
Welcome, Haley!
1.) What is a yo (yarn over)?
It’s an increase that creates an eyelet. Go to the video section and click on increases/decreases.
2.) How to increase/decrease stitches?
See answer to number 1.

I suspect it’s the cast on you’re using. Backwards loop cast on always leaves that yarn at the end. Go to the videos and click on Cast-ons. I suggest Long Tail or Knitted cast on.
The number of needles doesn’t matter for this situation.
If you give us an idea of what you’d like to knit we can help. There are thousands of patterns.
Hi, Haylee. Welcome to the wonderful world of knitting and to Knitting Help. It sounds like you’re off to a great start.
- What is a yarn over?
A yarn over (yo) is simply wrapping the yarn around the needle as if you were making a stitch but you do it between stitches. You then continue knitting as normal in the next stitch. Move the yarn to the front or back as appropriate for the next stitch (in the back for a knit, in the front for a purl) and continue knitting as normal. A yo can be used as an increase and/or to purposely make a hole in your knitting (an eyelet).
- How to increase/decrease stitches?
There are many ways to increase and usually a pattern will specify which you should use. If you look at the Free Videos tab at the top you will find a link to pages devoted to increases and decreases.

This is more complicated to answer. First, what cast on have you been using? That can have an effect on how your first row works out. I expect the problem is in your join to work in the round. My favorite video for showing and explaining it is here.
Check out the Free Videos, most of them are intended for new knitters and are very helpful. Youtube has lots of knitting videos also.
What do you want to make for your first big project? Be sure to ask any other questions you have, there are lots of helpful people here to answer them.

Thanks so much:) very helpful. The cast on method i had been using was casting all of the stitches onto one needle and slipping them all off purlwise onto the other needles… perhaps i wasnt doing it right or need another method or something lol idk but i will check out the videos
as for the big project… I’m not for sure but lately i thought it’d be cool to try knitting socks. Or maybe a cool scarf or something lol. My parents are interested in me knitting them an afghan throw blanket or whatever it’s called that you throw over couches and I’ve checked out tutorials in various places but i look at all the complicated abbreviations and I’m just like “…woahh”. So i think to begin… probably something simple… if you have any suggestions jus lemme know
I’m brand new to knitting but I’m teaching myself different stitches and learning the increases ETC but making dish clothes. I think I’m gonna try cables next. There are a lot of free patterns… good luck! I wish I had learned to knit years ago.
What we all mean by your cast-on method–there are a whole lot of ways to get loops onto a needle, and some of them stretch more than others. It doesn’t mean any one is better than another, just that they’re different, and if you look in the video section you’ll see what I mean.
An afghan pattern doesn’t have to be complicated to be pretty. Sometimes you can do something fairly plain in a fancy yarn and have it look really nice. Since you’re starting out, I’d see about a heavier yarn and slightly bigger needles and see if that wouldn’t make it go faster for you–that, or knit something in strips that are joined later. Strips let you see progress more quickly and if you happen to mess up, it’s easier to frog 25 stitches back a few rows than 250! (Been there,. done that, didn’t like it.) There are so many free patterns you might like that it’s hard to recommend one, but if you watch the videos here and read a little about the abbreviations, pretty soon nothing will scare you. :knitting:
