I am SOOOOOOOOO happy to have found this forum! I am just learning how to knit - I’ve been “crafty” my whole life - mainly scrapbooking and paper crafts - although I love to cross-stitch as well. A good friend started a knitting project after hearing that Julia Roberts likes to knit So I wanted to try it too. It’s actually very hard. But it’s something to do while I do something else like sitting in waiting rooms, watching TV, listening to music or books on CD.
I can’t wait to meet y’all (yep, “y’all” - I’m from southeastern VA).
If anyone knows of some really SIMPLE patterns, I’d like to make something other than a big, long, knitted “thing”. Nothing too hard, tho - I will lose patience and get frustrated.
I’m sure I’ll enjoy checking out everyone’s work. Like I said, I’m REAL new at this so not sure if I’m ready to try any really cool projects yet, but I’m gonna learn…!
You don’t have to make a scarf, but it is best if you do knit a long skinny thing just to practice the the two stitches (knit and purl) and develop an even tension. You can make it more interesting by making a pattern of stitches on this rectangle, something that you might use for another project… something like -
[ol]
[li]knit[/li][li]knit[/li][li]knit[/li][li]knit[/li][li]purl[/li][li]knit[/li][li]purl[/li][li]knit[/li][li]knit[/li][li]knit[/li][li]knit[/ol]then do some other combination like ribbing in which you knit and purl on the same row like knit2, purl 2, knit 2, purl 2, etc. It doesn’t have to BE anything, but you’ll learn a lot. ;)[/li]
Also, do check out all the forums and get acquainted!
Hey Spinderella - -
I’m not new to the knitting thing, but new to the site. Just wanted to say Welcome to the knitting club! I’ve been knitting for almost 4 years now, and am just venturing to my first sock. I’ve done a lot of scarves, in every type of yarn you can imagine; one pair of felted mittens, a yet unfinished Teddy Bear Sweater…(but I’m on the hood), several prayer shawls, (Which I might suggest you try. K3, P3, using big needles), and all kinds of dishcloths. Knitting is a wonderful thing for me and I hope it will be for you too!
Welcome to our Little World…Knitting was quite difficult for me to. I just started in May. I can’t tell you how much I’ve learned from this forum. It’s a great thing!!
Ditto the welcomes…I’m pretty new at this, too and COMPLETELY understand being ready to do more than just a long strip of knitting but really not ready to do “patterns” like sweaters, hats or socks. I started looking around and decided to try two things. One is rectangles for a knitting group called the “Handmade Afhgan Project (HAP)” where volunteers knit (or crochet) 6 x 9 rectangles and they are then sent to people who crochet them all together into afghans and donate them to wounded warriors. So…I’m still only doing small pieces of knitting, but I get to practice, practice, practice (which I need), my stitches are getting more consistent (finally) AND I get to help a worthy cause. Here’s the link if you want to look into it. http://www.rectangle6x9.org/
Then…I was reading the Knit Along (KA) threads on this site (KH) and got curious about knitting dishcloths. Again, easy to knit and practice knit/purls but I don’t have to try to figure out increases and decreases…it’s really just a matter of changing the size of your needles and type of yarn. I started with Sugar 'N Cream cotton yarn and really have enjoyed making those…again, easy even for me, but useful; cheaper than buying them…even at the $$ store. Here’s the pattern I just finished doing a few with.
I used Sugar and Cream cotton yarn and Needle size: #8 or #9 (I used #8 for one and #9 for another. The 8 is just a little smaller). The best part about this one is that it has a border…why is that best you ask? Because I DO NOT LIKE starting a row with a pearl stitch.
Cast on 39 stitches and Knit 4 rows for garter stitch border THEN:
Row 1: K5 (P1 K3)* repeat to last two stitches, K2
Row 2: K3 (P1 K3)* repeat to end.
Repeat these two rows to desired length
End with knitting 4 more rows – Bind off, weave ends and go wash a dish!
If you try it, let me know how you do. You’ll love being a member of this group…it’s a great group, helpful and fun!
