Hello everybody :) My square turned into a rectangle :/

Hi there!

Ive just started to knit, and im following a pattern for a garter stitch blanket made up of 56 squares. My first square is more like a rectangle! oh no! It said to cast on 14 stitches, knit 24 rows.

Does anybody have any idea what I may be doing wrong?

thanking you in advance

That should work out right. How does your gauge work with the pattern gauge? But to fix it, just rip out a couple rows until it’s square.

Even if you have to rip back, don’t be discouraged, that’s when we learn the most…and the fastest!

Hi Tara from Scotland! Welcome to KH!

Obviously 24 rows were too many to obtain your square. (Sorry!) When you rip back on this first square, try to keep track of how many rows you had to rip out. Let’s just say 20 rows is going to be the perfect number. (I’m just using that as an example. Could be more; could be less.)That way you’ll know how many rows to knit for the next square and all the following ones.
