Hello and help!

Hi everyone and hello…I just started out knitting as I find it takes the stress away from every day life of a stay at home farmer’s wife…it totally relaxes me. the only thing is…my mother taught me the basics and I have learned everything else I know from either you tube or this website…thank you…so what do I go and do…decide to jump right into a pattern. the only thing is, is that I am having a hard time reading my pattern and I am stuck, thus not staying very “unstressed”. lol…I do not understand what this part of the pattern means and if someone can please explain this to me in “beginners terms”, I would SOOOOOOO appreciate it. I knew I should have bought knitting for idiots…lol…[U]inc 1 st each end of needle on 3rd and each of the following 4 rows. 58 sts.[/U] I AM STUCK THUS CAN NOT KNIT. I am hoping some of you pros can please help me…and I am glad I found this website…also a question…when you guys started out knitting…did you become addicted to wool??? I mean I find I am…we go shopping, my kids go to electronics…i head to the wool…

Here’s my best interpretation, we’ll see if others agree:
starting with row 3, I would knit into the front and back of the first and last stitch of each row for five rows total - rows 3 through 7 - (view the video for that or choose another increase from the increases page on here: http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/increases, since the pattern doesn’t specify WHICH increase).

Increase by knitting into the front and back of the first or second stitch (I use the second) on the needle and the second last or last stitch on the 3rd row. This should be a knit row.

Then purl 1 row, knit 1 row, purl 1 row and then do your increases again - the following 4th row and again knit row.

Repeat those 4 rows until you reach the required number of stitches.

Hmm…I know it seems like a lot of increases at once, and a pattern often calls for regular knit/purl rows between increase rows, but to me, it sounds like this pattern is calling for 5 rows of increases in succession, on rows 3 through 7. However, I agree with khaosx5 that it would probably look nicer if you do the increases in the second stitch and second to last stitch of each row.

Yes, you would do the increases on all rows for 5 rows total. The 3rd row and the next 4 rows.

You got two conflicting answers in this thread- my suggestion is to check your pattern again. If it says “on 3rd and each of the following 4 rows” then I would follow merchgirl’s responses. If, however, it says “on 3rd and each of the following 4th rows” (the difference is “4 rows” or “4th rows”) then I would follow khaosx5’s directions. Good luck! :slight_smile:

I just wanted to thank you all that helped me…I am going to take all your advice and go and look at the pattern again and see which one helps me…at least I know if I have any more problems i can come back on here…will let you know…THANX

I would agree with this interpretation. It says, “3rd and each of the following 4 rows.” NOT “and every 4th row.”

“Each of the following” should mean exactly that-- increase on rows 3, 4, 5, 6, & 7.
