I just got back from my trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and we had a blast! I wasn’t sure what the “rules” were about taking knitting on board, so I didn’t want to risk my “good” yarn, and “good” needles to being confinscated. The night before we left, I stopped at a Walmart and found this inexpensive yarn made from recycled plastic bottles! Comes in lots of lovely colors and is as soft as wool. I was so impressed. I also bought non-metalic bamboo (renewable resource!) needles for CHEAP! Happily, I was able to take my knitting on the plane and did mucho KIP on our 5 day vacation.

I call the drunkard’s path pattern I designed [I]Margaritas y Mohitos[/I] and I’m sure it needs no explanation.

It looks great! Did you have any issues with taking your knitting on board the flight? IOW, did they comment at all or say nothing? I’m going on a flight soon and would really like to take the “good stuff”.

Nope! I do it in my head. I cast on 80 stitches and seed stitch for 6 rows. Then I counted out 5 stitches on each end to continue the border in seed stitch and the 70 (69) stitches in the middle became the pattern. Between the borders, I knit accross making every 10 stitch a purl for the pattern to revolve around - just an easy way to mark it. Wound up having to drop one stitch to make it work, thus the 69. Then, using a combination of k2tog, yo, on the right hand slants, and yo, s1k1 psso for the left hand slants, I just increased the distance from the pivotal purl by one each knitted row, until I had a stairstep of 5. My purl rows kept the pivot point (as a knit) and the seed stitch borders, but otherwise were purl accross, no pattern stitchwork.

They never said a word to me! Apparently knitters don’t look too dangerous. We made a few jokes about radical lace and subversive knitting with airport security, but they were great.

Pretty! And thanks for the info on the yarn, I’m often on the look out for kid friendly (aka, inexpensive, soft and durable) yarns.

I’m not one to just “cast on and go” yet, so I’m very impressed with those who do, well done!

It’s the “eco” version of Caron Simply Soft. And it’s cheap, cheap, cheap. I really enjoyed working with it. Great stitch definition.

I’ll have to keep an eye out for the yarn. Does it work as well as cotton for dish/washcloths? Beautiful pattern and color!

I honestly couldn’t predict what its performance would be like in a dishcloth application. It’s an acrylic yarn with recycled plastic in it. I’d probably stick with cotton for the dishcloths, myself.
