I have a couple of questions… I found a pattern that is similar to what I want to make, but it is multicolored. The pattern may be a bit above my skill level. It is multicolored and I don’t know how I would do it if I wanted to just do solid. Valentine Love shawl Valentine Love - Shawl – Hobbii
But I am wondering, why is there only an increase on the right side? When I make a dishcloth, I increase on each side- so why is it only on one side? This remains my question because I had thought that maybe I could just make a dishcloth like pattern and make it with the cabled hearts but again, the increase is only on one side, therefore I would have to do twice as many rows just to have enough stitches to make the heart. Celtic Cable Heart Stitch Knitting Pattern - Studio Knit
There is 500m in each skein of the pattern yarn. If you work out how much weight of your single colour yarn you need to make 500m length you can work that amount of weight, then move on to the 'skein 2’ instruction but continue in your single colour.
The shawl has increases each end of the row to make the triangle shape from tip to wider edge.
I’m not sure if you want to make the dishcloth heart onto the shawl or make the shawl heart into a rectangle shape.
Your skill level is certainly up to these patterns, you produce lots of tricky knitting. Both patterns are lovely, hard to pick between them.
Assuming you want the triangle shape you could cast on enough stitches for the cabled spine and skip the pointy end. There are different ways to increase for triangle shawls. Some have increases on both sides of the spine and the ends and some have increases only at the ends of rows. When you write about a dishcloth, which one are you thinking of? Grandmother’s Favorite increases at the beginning of each row.
I would look at the pattern but don’t wish to create an account to download it.
It was Grandmother’s favorite that I was thinking of… but then, (and here is where it gets confusing) I was thinking of just doing garter stitch instead of stockinette, but I assume that changes the look and effect of the hearts. The pattern from Hobbii has lots of difficult stuff- stuff I don’t really want to fiddle with. If I added stitches at the beginning of the row like the dishcloth, then I suppose I would just have to allott 1 extra stitch at the beginning of each row, then I could do stockinette. Just thinking about the how to is making my head hurt
Garter stitch has more rows per inch than stockinette so yes, it would change things. You can do an increase at the beginning of each row in stockinette too. That’s not uncommon on shawls. The other way would be to increase each end of the row on the knit side and not on the purl side.

I clicked download and a window comes up to either input email address and make account OR No account just download pattern, it’s a little lower in the window. There’s also an option to cancel even after the first click as its the second click which downloads it.

Thank you!!! Having to sign up to download for free irks me no end. I’ve not found a way to get Lion Brand patterns without an account but will look again. The same option might exist there.

As much as I hate saying this or being told the same: Trust the pattern. Looking at it once I got the download I agree with @Creations that the increases as written are going to make the shape shown. You should be able to cast on and follow the pattern to see if it’s working relatively quickly.

I’d be happy to help and reduce the head hurt if I was able to help in any way. I’m just not really sure what it is you’re after.
The triangle shawl can be made in garter for a different look, you’d know if you liked the look after maybe one cable pattern.
I understand. I don’t sign up to all sorts of places either but there is the occassional place I trust I will sign up but reject any kind of newsletter etc. I get most of the spammy stuff on my device from just looking at Web pages (random patterns and pics) even when rejecting everything that can be rejected.

Are you comfortable working the chart sts? The first set up rows and Cable section gets you started with the heart placement. From then on, follow the chart or work the heart from the dishcloth pattern.
The increases are symmetrical either worked at each end of the RS rows (as opposed to WS rows) or worked only at the beginning of the RS row then at the beginning of the WS rows. Either gives you the triangle shape and will work.
You can do this. It’s just getting the concept clear in your mind to start and that’s an important thing to do.
I rarely get spam. Should we have a thread about avoiding it? I don’t wish to hijack this topic.
