Cute pattern.

As the cable is horizontal and you are picking up along the edge you will need to pick up fewer than one stitch per row, this is because stitches are rectangular, not square. If you undo the pick up row and redo it, picking up in a ratio of stitches per row which matches your gauge you will end up closer to the correct number.
The ratio may be 2 stitches for every 3 rows for instance.
For some gauges the ratio may be different, 3 stitches to 4 rows or 4 stitches to 5 rows - I’m just looking at your number of stitches and doing an estimate. If you know how many cable rows you knitted it would be easier to work out the ratio more accurately.

Welcome to the forum!
Usually for stockinette you get a nice flat band by picking up 3sts for every 4 rows. It’s not an exact science but that usually works out very nicely. Pick up a stitch in the first 3 rows, skip a row, then repeat the pick up for 3 rows, then skip a row and so on.
I often don’t get exactly the number of sts the pattern calls for probably because my row gauge is off but the 3sts for every 4 rows works quite well.
Darling sweater.

If you’re starting with 184 stitches and you want to pick up 158 stitches, my maths suggests that you need to pick up 6 stitches out of every 7. So pick up 6 in each of the next 6 stitches, then skip one, and repeat. The last gap will be 8 stitches as the numbers are not strictly divisible!

Welcome aboard…good luck with the cute baby sweater :yarn:
