Having trouble with charts in pattern

I really need some help with this pattern… it’s a free lattern i got on Love Knitting. It’s called “Ross’s Blanket”. I’ve knitted 5 of the 6 rows in the pattern and what i have doesn’t look anything like the picture on the pattern. There is a chart with two columns an the beginning that shows two rows as follows
• P1 on RS, K1 on WS
(blank) K1 on RS, P1 on WS

There’s another chart at the bottom that shows 6 rows with the stitches in the “pattern” only.

The stitches for each row are in the middle of all this. I’m not sure what the first chart applies to or how it affects the 2nd chart…:weary: any help would be greatly appreciated…

The chart at the bottom is the main pattern chart. The small box at the top is the key for the lower chart. It’s telling you that boxes with dots are purl on the RS, knit on the WS and blank boxes are knit on the RS, purl on the WS.
If you prefer to follow the written directions, they are there under instructions. The chart is a shorthand way of displaying those same directions.

I don’t know what I’d do without the forum… Everyone is so helpful. Especially you… I was doing it as per the written directions, but thought I was making a mistake because my ‘pattern’ didn’t look like the picture IN the pattern… maybe I just need to go a few more times to ‘see’ it. Thanks very much!!! I was getting a little discouraged with myself because of my confusion. I guess I shouldn’t be so hard on me!!! Anyway, back to it and happy knitting!!!

Let’s see if I got this right… do you mean the pattern stitches (total 4 stitches)?

The pattern steps read as follows and if I ignore the charts, other than R1 and 2, which are not repeated, I just proceed as follows:

Row 3 (RS): k to marker, SM, (k1,p1, k2), repeat to end, SM, K to end

Row 4 (WS): K to marker, SM, purl to marker, SM, k to end

Row 5 (RS): k to marker, SM, (k3,p1), repeat to 1 st before marker, k1, SM, K to end

Row 6 (WS): K to marker, SM, purl to marker, SM, k to end

If I follow you, that means for Rows 3 and 5 (dots in the chart) I actually switch the “pattern” as follows:

Row 3 (RS), knit to marker, SM, (p1, k1,p2)?

Row 4: (WS), K to marker, SM, purl to marker, SM, knit to end

Row 5: (RS) k to marker, SM, (p3, k1), repeat to last st, k1, SM, K to end…

I may be completely wrong here, but I needed to be sure… look forward to hearing from you…

This is correct as you’ve written it out with the boded addition.
Row 3 (RS): k to marker, SM, (k1,p1, k2), repeat to one stitch before the marker, K1, SM, K to end

You may be over thinking the pattern rows that you quote in the second part of the post. You don’t have to switch the knits and purls in the pattern. Just repeat rows 3-6 for the given number of times.

I’m so glad to hear that! Again, thanks for your help. FYI, I finished the “Heavenly Sweater”… Once i board it and add the ribbon to the collar, I’ll attach a pic to “Whatcha Knitting”. Always wanted to do that…
