Having pattern gauge issue

hi everyone! i am knitting the elann pinwheel sweater for my daughter, the problem when i knit my swatch i am getting the row gauge they are calling for on the pattern but not the stitch gauge. what should i do about this, if i go up a needle size that would then change my row guage right?
thanks!
:)jen

I think that generally speaking, stitch gauge is a bit more crucial than row gauge. That said, I’m not sure how much it actually matters when you’re making a shawl that doesn’t have to “fit”, per se. If it was me, I’d say go for the stitch gauge.

I agree that stitch gauge should be most important. You can always knit more or fewer rows, but you can’t make it wider or narrower.
