I have a limited amount of cotton yarn, and I want to make something, anything for me.
Question: If I add up the total yds of yarn, and knit true to swatch,
could I use any pattern that would equal the amount of yarn needed?
ex: weight 1/75 oz; 336 yards total.
I saw neck scarf pattern online, but don’t want to pay $10.00 for it.
Will that work in theory? If not, any ideas for a project of this size?
Thanks,
Marilyn
You need to compare the weight of the yarn and the yardage. For a scarf, this sort of thing might not be critical. Do you have just the one ball of cotton yarn?
I have 4 skeins of yarn that total 336 yards. Small skeins.
The package states the weight of the yarn is 1 3/4 oz.
Does the weight (oz.) indicate the type of the yarn i.e. fingering, sport, etc? It is the 1824 cotton, so no stretch.
I’m wanting to do something with it without running out before the end of the project.
Thanks so much,
Marilyn
Ah, I know this yarn. I have some, in fact. I just used some, in fact. This is a worsted weight yarn. More than anything, these different weights of yarn are indicative of the gauge. Let’s see, 4 skeins. You could probably make a small shrug. You could make a couple of hats. A purse. Do you have anything in particular in mind?
That’s great yarn.
You might be able to get a cropped top or camisole out of it.
See what you can find here.

You could also get a few more balls in another color and do stripes (1824 has a wonderful color range.)
BTW, when people ask about the weight of the yarn, they don’t mean the weight of the skein (1 3/4 oz, 50 gms) but the thickness of it. Like sport, worsted, chunky/bulky or whatever. By using the same thickness of yarn you can substitute one yarn for another in the same yardage… or pretty close.
