Have question on converting circular knitting to flat

I am following a pattern for a hat done on circular needles, but want to make the hat on two needles. All I have done so far is the 2x2 ribbing on the first 41/2 inches. Now the pattern reads:
rds 1, 3, 7, 9, and 11 (rs): *p2, k6, p2, k8; rep from *
rnds 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10: *p10, k8; rep from *.
rnd 5: *p2, k6, p2, 4/4CF; rep from *.
rnd 12: *p10, k8; rep from *.

rep rnds 1-12 once more, then work rnds 1-6 once more.

                        CROWN SHAPING

rnd 1: *p2, k2, k2 tog, k2, p2, k3, k2tog, k3; rep from *_64 sts. (started with 72 sts)
rnd 2: *p4, p2tog, p3, k2, k2tog, k3; rep from *_56 sts.
rnd 3: *p2, k1, k2tog, k1, p2 , k2, k2tog; k2; rep from *_48sts
rnd 4: *p3, p2 tog, p2, k2, k2tog, k1; rep from *_40 sts.
rnd 5: *p2, k2tog, p2, k1, k2tog, k1; rep from *_32 sts.
rnd 6: p2, p2tog, p1, k1, k2tog; rep from *_24sts.
rnd 7: *p1, p2tog, p1, k2tog; rep from *_16 sts
rnd 8: *p2 tog; rep from *_8sts.

I’m sorry I had to write out the whole pattern, as it was a pattern copied for me from a friend, but thought you might need ALL the directions to tell me row by row If I have to knit them different since I am using two straight needles rather than circular. Would really appreciate some kind soul helping me with this as I really want to get it made before the flowers start blooming, LOL, Thanks so much in advance

Work the odd numbered rows as written.

Even rows would be worked p8 k10.

Decrease section, odd rows as written

rnd 2: *p4, p2tog, p3, k2, k2tog, k3; rep from
row 2: p3, k2tog tbl, p2, k3, k2tog, k4

For the even rows, as I did above, reverse the order of the stitches and change the knits to purls and purls to knits.

Thanks so much Ingrid for this information, but I do have 1 question. When you explained how you reversed the order of the decrease row (row2), you have p3, k2tog tbl, my question is why am I knitting through the back loop on the 1st k2tog and not on the second k2tog or even why I am knitting through the back loop in the first place. I think I understand everything else you’ve explained, but just didn’t understand that part. Really appreciate your help on this.

I figured that the k2tog would be the best replacement for the p2tog and the k2togtbl would be the best replacement for the k2tog when done on the wrong side.

Actually you would use the p2tog on the WS for a k2tog on the RS. P2tog tbl would show as a left slanting dec on the RS so you would use it instead of k2togtbl; ssp would be better as it wouldn’t twist the sts and is used for the back of ssk or skp.
