Hat Question

Hi all,

I’m knitting the Just Ducky Hat: http://www.p2designs.com (click Patterns, then Free Patterns, and it’s the Just Ducky Hat–sorry, but the link that goes directly to the hat does not work) and trying to understand the instructions for the duck’s bill.

Here they are:

CO 8 stitches (4 on each needle). This I get. Now it says:

Rnd 1: knit around, splitting the stitches into 3 needles (ndl1: 2 st, ndl2: 2 st, and ndl3: 4 st). How is this done?

Rnd 2: 1st needle: k1, inc1, k across, 2nd needle: k across to next to last st, inc 1, k1, 3rd needle: k1, inc 1, k across to next to last st, inc 1, k1
repeat rnd 2 until there are 32 stitches total.

I’m new at this and I do not understand what the instructions are saying. Can anyone help clarify?

Thanks for any help!

I believe they just want you to rearrange your stitches on the needles. You can knit one round and the just slip them as if to purl from one to the other so you have the correct number on each needle.

On row, two, you’ll be doing your increases at the point they tell you. In the beginning, since you only have a few stitches on each needle, knitting across doesn’t make much sense, but as your stitches increase, it’ll be more obvious.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Ingrid! I’ll give it a try.

Sorry, just one more question–does knitting across simply mean knitting to the next needle in the series?

Yes–just finish the stitches on the needle without any further increases or decreases.

Thanks again Ingrid!

Sometimes, the instructions for working a pattern on Double-Point-Needles (DPN’s) can seem confusing, but like Ingrid says- trust the pattern. Just keep working it, and it will teach you. Don’t worry about a mistake, it’s how we all learn.

Thanks Trucker. DPNs are daunting, that’s for sure but I’m determined. Thanks for your kind words!
