Hat problem

Hey everyone.

I just finished up a cute hat/neckwarmer project out of one of my pattern books and the ribbing turned out a little too big. This usually is a problem for me when making hats with a ribbing edge, don’t know why I keep trying. So I thought since it was with wool that I could felt it slightly to shrink it a little and made it worse, now it’s ginormous around. Is there any way I can salvage this project or at least the yarn?

Thanks.

You might have superwash wool whcih sometimes tends to grow. You should be able to rip out your item and knit it on a smaller needle or with less stitches.

Could I just rip out the bottom and redo the ribbing or would that be wonky?

If the rest of hat fits then ripping out the ribbing and either decreasing a bit or using a needle a couple sizes smaller…maybe both if it’s really big, would probably work.

Note: if it’s the cast on edge you’d be ripping it won’t rip back as easy as the bind off edge, but it can be done.

With ribbing it’s really tedious to take out the cast on and ribbed stitches, even in the round. What you could do is cut the yarn after the ribbing, put the hat stitches on the needle, then take the end from the ribbing and redo it.

I vote for this method…New yarn, smaller needles…I think you would be happy with the results.

AND if your not careful…you may learn the benefit of “Provisional cast on”…LOL

Good luck!!
I want to see before and after pics!!!

I vote for the second method too. Actually, I’d just hold a “tuck” in my fingers to approximate how much I need to reduce the size. If it is more than an inch or so you might want to make the rib band smaller around. I had to do this recnetly myself. The yarn was inelastic, so it didn’t draw in as much as I had hoped. Wish I had thought to use the end from the ribbing! I undid it and wound a ball.
