Hat Pattern Ideas

I need some help. I’ve never really created a pattern before but i would like to make a hate from this beautiful bulky alpaca i have. The problem is, i have no idea how to calculate how many stitches i need, etc. I would like it to have it long enough to roll up about 3 - 4 inches. I think i want it to start in a 2x2 rib but maybe have thre rest in stokinette. Finally, i’d like to do it in the round and am not sure how to get those decreases in. Any pointers? patterns out there? Thanks so much for the help!

My friend makes hats with no pattern. In fact, she only always makes the same ribbed style…k2p2 all the way, on two needles. then when she thinks it’s deep enough, she knits 2 tog all around, again and again until there’s only two stitches on the needle, then cuts the thread and pulls it tight. Sew it together at the one seam.

To get your edge to curl, you can knit stockinette (knit one row, purl one row) for several rows, right at the start. I did a hat that way and it was so cute! Then when the depth you want (keep trying it on), begin to knit 2 tog for several rows.

How to judge size:
Measure your head with a string around, then use that string to judge when your cast-on is long enough. It should stretch a bit.

Good luck, and keep on talking here.

Here’s a “pattern” I use all the time. It’s all knit in stockinette, in the round, and it’s easy-peasy. I’ve made about ten hats with this, and I love it.

That was a GREAT hat post!!! I love the inclusoin of wine in the knitting recipe… I know it’s always included in mine ;o)

If you want to make your own pattern then you need to figure out your gauge. So do the measuring like this hat recipe suggests and then do a gauge swatch. This is for a basic hat, but it’s a good one to start with.
