Hat Pattern Help

I’m knitting a hat from a pattern that I believe has a mistake. I can’t find an errata for it so I was hoping someone might be able to tell me if my gut is right.

I’m at the crown decrease section and the pattern goes like this:

Begin crown decreases. Divide sts into 3 sections of 40 sts each and separate with markers.

Round 28: Knit within 3 sts of each marker, k2tog, k1, slip markers, k1, ssk.

Rounds 29 and 30: K

Repeat rounds 28 to 30 ten times, switching to dpn when work is too small to work on circular needle – 60 sts.

Round 31: Divide each of the three sections in half, making six sections of 10 sts each, and separate with markers.

Continue making prior decreases and also decrease in the same manner at new markers on every round until 9 sts remain.

I think I should do the second spliting of sections after doing the first section of the decreases 10 times and after there are 60 sts. Or do I simply do rounds 28-30 one time and then split into 6 sections decreasing every 3rd round until there are 60 sts then begin decreasing every round after?

I hope I explained my confusion clearly.

Thanks…Keith

You split the stitches into 3 groups and decrease for quite a while - 33 rows or so? - until you have 60 stitches, then you split into 6 groups and start decreasing differently.

Your confusion is because the second splitting is done on ‘row 31’ right? And that only allows for one set of the first decreases? That is possibly bad wording, you repeat rows 28-30 about ten times before you start row 31.

Good luck!

Thanks so much redwitch for your quick reply and help. And yes, my confusion was with the ‘row 31’ wording. I’m glad that my gut was right.
