Hat in the round is too big

Hello,

I knit a hat in the round to match the scarf I already knit for the hubby. Unfortunately, I think I messed up on the gauge, for it is far too big!

I showed him some pics of before and after for felting, and he doesn’t like the “fuzzy” look of a felted garment. So, can I sew a seam up the back? How would one do this? I haven’t been able to find anything describing such a technique. I need to take in about three inches for it to fit right.

I do have some leftover yarn (a little bit). I also have a sewing machine, but the yarn is pretty bulky and I don’t think the hat would fit that well under the pressure foot. Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

Here is a picture of the catastrophe, if it helps.

Thanks!

That made me chuckle!

You could sew two lines where you want the edges of the seam to be and then cut next to them. Use a small stitch and make sure you get all the knitting sewn. That would hold the stitches securely, then you could seam as if the hat was knit on two needles.

Personally, though, I’d just remake the hat. But that’s just me. I hate to sew.

Thanks for the suggestion! I did the two seams, though it was hard with the decreases near the crown. I was too chicken to cut before doing the final seam, though, so I joined and then cut. Turned out I had to get rid of 8 inches!

Anyway, now his hat fits, and he says he doesn’t mind the feel of the seam. Thanks again!

I’m glad it worked out!
