Hat help!

Hi! So i went over to a local knitting store to help me get started with my first hat. The lady there said i could do a hat with circular needles and not knit in the round… everytime i finish a row i shift the yarn to the other side and start again.Problemis, I end up with the hat being connected by yarn and i don’t know what i should do or if it’s supposed to be that way. Anyway, I’m really lost! help please!

You don’t shift the sts to the other end of the needle, you bring both ends together and knit the stitches into a tube. If your sts aren’t enough to go all the way around the needle, you need to use the Magic Loop technique, found on the Advanced techniques page, or the single loop variation.

You want to knit it flat rather than in the round? :??

If you want to knit flat and seam make sure when turn your work that the working yarn is on the left needle.

If you want to knit in the round so there is no seaming you make sure the working yarn is coming from the right needle. If you look at your work you can see why it would join.
